Community Legal Aid and the Commonwealth Care Alliance® (CCA) have announced a new partnership to support low-income and seniors and families in the greater Springfield area. The medical-legal partnership (MLP) between Community Legal Aid, a non-profit organization that provides free civil (non-criminal) legal services to elderly and low-income residents of central and western Massachusetts, and ACC, a national multi-state health organization with proven expertise in coordinating and delivering complex care, is an innovative collaboration between the legal communities that aims to address adverse health legal issues that focus on the social determinants of health (SDH). “The social determinants of health can have a significant impact on an individual`s mental and physical well-being, and this is especially true for those with significant needs or limited financial resources,” said Dr. Peggy Johnson, CCA`s Vice-President and Chief of Psychiatry. For example, extreme and prolonged stress coupled with major financial constraints can lead to an increase in blood pressure, leading to adverse medical events such as a heart attack or stroke. This partnership with Community Legal Aid can go a long way toward reducing legal stress for people in the Springfield area and significantly improving their overall health. The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation funds and supports civil legal aid organizations throughout the Commonwealth. In the MLP model, medical providers are trained to identify situations where a patient`s medical needs can be improved through legal advocacy, and then work with the MLP lawyer to resolve them. Examples of harmful legal problems include poor housing conditions or the risk of eviction and homelessness; lack of access to public services, leading to food insecurity or financial instability; or the need for protection orders for a person threatened with physical violence in the home. “This is a great opportunity for Hampden County`s private legal community to have a direct impact on the health and well-being of the most vulnerable members of the community,” said Meredith Palmer, volunteer director of Community Legal Aid.
