The tires are DOT street legal, so they don`t have as many Knobbies for off-road driving. This means you don`t have as good traction, making it easier to fall the more aggressive you are on the brakes and accelerate. The WR250R has a street bike-based motor, so it has no common parts with the WR250F or YZ250F off-road motorcycles. It`s tuned for smooth, predictable performance and designed to drive on the highway without the drain. The Yamaha WR250F is an easy bike to ride, but difficult to understand. You could call it a high-end beginner road bike or a racer-designed game bike. It is clearly a machine designed to stick to the letter of the law, but we do not know which law it is. The WR is not legal as a dual-sport bike or California Green. It is a bicycle that resists any attempt to be categorized or defined.
But if you take it literally, you realize that it doesn`t have to fall into a category or group. I scratched a yz250fx with a label and a wr250r with dirt mods. The YZFX is not at all a good dual sport, it is only good if your race only, high maintenance engine, rigid suspension, 300 hours of complete rebuild, WR250R is a very good dual sport, engine with slip, better ratio, performance filter, better tires and programmer is as good as the previous WR250F but can last 30,000 mi, Forks with only straight springs and rear shock absorber with adequate ventilation, is good as the early WR250F, weight can be reduced to 280lb wet, the I know a few wr250f around that are legalized and don`t seem to have any problems, the fear of interstate needs has changed if you plan long enough on 70mph+ trips If anyone is still reading this, how do you cut the wr250r and the XT250 is it even in the game. It has a seat height of 31.9 inches. If your off-road forays aren`t too far away — or even if they are and you can take frequent breaks along the way — a good alternative to owning trucks or large ADV machines is a lightweight single-cylinder dual-sport motorcycle. For the lowest weight and most power, European manufacturers like KTM and Husqvarna offer very serious (and expensive) lightweight double sports. But all Japanese manufacturers also sell cheaper models in displacements from 200 to 650cc. The 250 weighs just 296 pounds at around 321 pounds and still makes enough power for riders (who aren`t exceptionally tall) to not only tackle multiple off-road bikes on the same terrain — at a slower pace — but they can also be driven from home to the starting point, skipping the entire loading/unloading/repetitive process.
More land is also open to dual sport because, unlike an off-road motorcycle, it has a license plate and is legal on the thousands of miles of dirt public roads that connect, say, Nevada`s ghost towns and Tennessee`s national forests. Yes, it`s fine if you want an off-road motorcycle homologated for beginners. It is reliable, easy to drive, consumes a lot of fuel and has enough power to have fun. I have a 2007 WR250F that I want to make road legal in North Carolina. I have a few questions: has anyone used a WR250F as a dual sport? If so, what is the reliability and should I agree with the use of the highway? I could imagine that the engine could handle it, but maybe a little wobbly. Does anyone know how strict the DMV will be when registering my bike? It already has a headlight and a taillight, but it doesn`t have high beams and low beams, and I don`t know if I need to replace the Tai light or if I need turn signals. And of course, I need an exterior mirror, a horn and a key ignition. Not to mention, I need DOT approved tires.
I love this bike and have taken it with me on several trails across the country and have taken a few rides on ATV approved roads, but have had minor issues where they require a registered vehicle. If someone has already gone through this process, I would appreciate some advice or information, or if it is worth it due to the cost of registration. In Ohio at least for my wr450f I had to pay $18 and fill out an affidavit on body change where I said I had done all the mods needed for legalization, they didn`t even inspect much to see if I really had, then pay for a replacement title Turn signals are not needed here even though I have them. But the requirements for my condition are 1 rearview mirror, one horn, one stop light license plate and one headlight. At 36.6 inches, it`s not the tallest off-road bike, but it`s larger than most street bikes. This makes it difficult to touch the ground if you are a small adult or have short legs like me. It is an off-road motorcycle homologated for bisport driving. If you are a beginner who wants to ride on the road and on easy trails, this is a good bike to start with. It`s not particularly good at anything, but it`s good and versatile in a lot of things.
The 2020 Yamaha WR250R we tested for this story shares much of its sister WR250F`s DNA, but has far fewer pieces of Unobtanium for racing, so it costs $1,900 less. However, at £296, it`s still the lightest of Japan`s affordable 200/250 double sports. The WR250R`s liquid-cooled single is based on the F`s 250cc enduro engine and shares the same bore and stroke, but has, among other things, lower compression and softer cam profiles for greater on-road transportability.
