Virginia Legal Scope of Practice for Medical Assistants

C. The following additional rules apply to medical assistants employed by institutions: D. Any professional company or company of a licensee, a hospital and a commercial enterprise which has medical facilities for its employees, supervised by one or more physicians or podiatrists, may employ one or more physician assistants in accordance with the provisions of this section. Laws on the scope of practice of medical assistants may vary from state to state. 2. Such a practice agreement, as described in paragraph 1 of this subsection, shall specify the functions that the physician or podiatrist authorizes his or her assistant to perform. Most states allow medical assistants to perform the following duties under the direct supervision of a physician, physician, licensed general practitioner or registered nurse: 1. Provide only those medical care services that fall within the practice and competence of the physicians or podiatrists on the patient care team, as prescribed in the Physician Assistant`s Practice Agreement. If a PA works outside the specialty of physicians or podiatrists on the patient care team, the PA`s duties are limited to areas that do not require a special clinical assessment, unless a separate practice agreement has been entered into for another physician or podiatrist for patient care. B.

Physician assistants may practise medicine to the extent and in the manner approved by Council. A physician on the patient care team or a podiatrist on the patient care team must be available at all times to work and consult with physician assistants. Each patient care team must determine the physician`s area of practice and a process for evaluating the PA`s performance. One. A physician on the patient care team or a podiatrist on the patient care team licensed under this chapter may be part of a patient care team with physician assistants and shall work and advise those physician assistants. No physician on the patient care team or podiatrist on the patient care team may work or see more than six physician assistants on a patient care team at the same time. The scope of practice of medical assistants depends on their clinical competence, training and employers` willingness to delegate clinical tasks. Some states do not provide specific regulatory instructions, while others may have their regulations. For example, Donald A. Balasa, JD, MBA, informs you about your state`s laws that govern the field of activity of medical assistants and other issues you may consider when staffing your office. Medical assistants assist physicians in patient care and practice management. F.

The prescription or dispensing of drugs may be authorized in accordance with § 54.1-2952.1.

In addition, a PA may conduct initial and ongoing assessment and treatment of each patient in a hospital, including their emergency department, in accordance with the Practice Agreement, including duties performed related to medical care in an emergency department.
