Public Legal Education Newfoundland

The Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland & Labrador (PLIAN) is an independent, not-for-profit organization and registered charity dedicated to educating Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about the law with the goal of improving access to justice. We are the designated provider of legal education and information for Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Canadian Association for Public Legal Education (PLEEA). PLIAN is funded by the Government of Canada, the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, with materials and projects funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and a number of other sources. Organizations have been formed in every province in Canada to provide important legal information to the public. These not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations believe that Canadians cannot fully exercise their rights if they do not know and understand the laws and the judicial system that affect them. Facilitating access to information about the law is essential to a fair justice system. The main objective of public law education and information bodies (EPJP) is to create an informed population that is knowledgeable about the law, is able to recognize and exercise its legal rights, fulfill its legal obligations and fulfill its duties as participants in a democratic society.
