She is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in Toronto in 1980. She joined her mother, Suzanne Hillier, at the law firm in Brampton, Ontario, and led a general litigation practice in real estate, commercial and criminal litigation until 1987, when she became a partner at Hiller and Hillier, after which she specialized in personal injury, including professional negligence claims. She co-founded the Ontario Trial Lawyer`s Association (OTLA) in 1991. Since 1991, she has given numerous lectures, presentations and articles on personal injury for OTLA and its magazine The Litigator. She has lectured and lectured for or on behalf of the Canadian Institute, the Ontario Bar Association, Queen`s University Faculty of Law, the Canadian Bar Association, Insight, the American Association of Justice (AAJ), the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA), the Canadian Medical – Legal Society, MAAD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), the Osgoode Hall Law Association and the Advocates Society. She was director and vice-president of the Ontario Trial Association for over 7 years. In October 2004, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.

In 1998 and 1995, the OTLA named her the most popular professor in the advocacy course at Queen`s University. She was invited to serve as Director of the Advocate`s Society from 2007 to 2010, and has lectured on behalf of the Advocate`s Society in Canada, Mexico and the Cayman Islands. Ava has appeared in trial courts at all levels in Ontario to represent injured plaintiffs and before the Court of Appeal. Their legal practice is limited to personal injury, disability claims denied and other insurance claims, including SABS claims, as well as claims for professional negligence.
