Legal Age to Ride a Motorcycle in Japan

A heavy motorcycle licence and a regular motorcycle licence have been separate licence categories since 1996. For this reason, Kawasaki motorcycles developed the Z2, in which the displacement of the Z1 was removed to 750 cc, and every motorcycle manufacturer saw cases where the chassis of their export vehicles was equipped with a 750 cc engine until the mid-1980s. Triumph Rocket III (2,294 cc, the displacement of all production motorcycles) Neither your usual Japanese driver`s license nor your foreign motorcycle driving license allows you to: ride a bike in Japan. You must be certified. Finally, you should know that you are not allowed to carry a passenger for one year after obtaining your motorcycle license (three years until you can take a passenger on highways). Taking a passenger on the central sections of the Capital Freeway (shutoko) is prohibited to all drivers, regardless of experience and age. A large two-wheeled motor vehicle (大型自動二輪車, ōgata jidō nirinsha), sometimes referred to as a heavy motorcycle, is one of the categories of vehicles in Japan`s Road Traffic Law. These vehicles (motorcycles) have a cylinder capacity exceeding 400 cc or a rated power exceeding 20 kW. Under Japanese law, no more than two people are allowed on a motorcycle, and even then, certain regulations and restrictions apply.

First of all, it takes a certain number of years of experience on a motorcycle (at least 1 year for normal roads and 3 years for highways). Then there are rules for the bike itself. The machine must be perfectly maintained with the necessary parts and have a cylinder capacity greater than or equal to 50cc or 126cc for medium roads or motorways. In addition, the driver must be at least 20 years old on motorways and have cycled in the last three years. There are also some roads and areas where tandem driving is completely prohibited. The above categories may seem like many options, but most people only need to consider one or two categories unless driving is part of their profession. The majority of Japanese license holders focus on obtaining a driver`s license for a “standard vehicle” and/or motorcycle license. Since the abolition of self-regulation in 1988, many so-called “liter engine” models with a displacement greater than 1,000 cc have been launched on the market. Postponed from the last few days, the costs of shipping motorcycles on ferries in Japan still vary depending on whether the cylinder capacity of the vehicle exceeds 750 cc or not.

In June 2005, it became possible to drive an AT motorcycle (automatic transmission) over 400 cc if the AT license for a heavy motorcycle was acquired. The success rate of those who take the test in a school is about 80% for medium-sized bikes and about 90% for large bikes. In comparison, the pass rate in official test centers for exactly the same exam is less than 5%. Admittedly, the number is undoubtedly somewhat skewed by those who come to the test with very little practice on the course (and sections like the balance beam require a bit of practice to get it right the first time, even if you have experience with the bike), but the percentages leave little doubt about the inherent bias. For the record, I have heard that examiners in official examination centres are often retired police officers who are extremely strict when it comes to assessing candidates. Depending on where you live in Japan, you may need a vehicle (and a legally required driver`s license) to commute to work and run daily errands. While this isn`t always the case if you live in a big city, a Japanese driver`s license offers some amenities, such as renting a vehicle for weekend adventures. If you want to get behind the wheel in Japan, read on to find out what kind of Japanese driver`s license you should get. Japanese law requires you to have a special license for certain classes of motorcycles. For a 50cc engine (such as a scooter), a normal Japanese driver`s license is acceptable.

To use a motorcycle or scooter over 50cc, you will need a mid-range or high-class driver`s license. Below is the approximate cost of getting your motorcycle license from scratch at a driving school. Note that the possession of an intermediate motorcycle license is a prerequisite for participation in the great cycling course. In comparison, the cost of taking the exam directly at a test center is about ¥22,500 (¥155). That`s ¥6,550 for the test itself and about ¥16,000 for mandatory classroom training.
