In honour of 45 years of law at the University of East London, Lady Hale spoke virtually about the importance of diversity in the legal sector. A law degree at a UK university initially focuses on the seven core subjects that form the core of law studies, including contracts, tort liability, criminal law, equity, the European Union, property, constitutional and administrative law. In addition to these subjects, students can choose elective modules in later years, covering topics such as business, sports or human rights. Our programs are as vibrant and diverse as our student community and our city. We operate at the crucial intersection of business, technology and entrepreneurial thinking and actively support positive change by advocating for sustainability, justice and social justice. The Faculty of Law at the University of East London has always had a proud and radical history, rooted in human rights, equality and the international perspective. Our law school was founded in 1975 by Edwin Lichtenstein, a South African anti-racist and anti-colonial activist and lawyer. He and his successor as head of the law school, Michael Slade, made it their mission to seek out those who were largely excluded from legal practice. As a result, they recruited young staff who wanted to open up legal education and the legal profession to women and ethnic minorities. From the beginning, the Faculty of Law strived to create an open and internationalist atmosphere for students and staff. Her law degree has been described as “liberal education through law,” challenging students to address the ways in which the law often reinforces inequalities and exclusions based on class, race, and gender.

The aim was to enable graduates to engage in the practice of law, public service, business and the academic community. In the early 1980s, Michael Slade conducted the first major academic study on the application of IT in legal education, which has produced sustained results to this day. The school`s ethos in human rights education and research has led to many influential international partnerships, including with UN-Habitat. Our staff members have published extensively on human rights, international law, conflict resolution, police powers, Islamic law, African law, international trade and development law, environmental law, consumer and development law, and legal theory. For 45 years, our law courses have combined international reach with the promotion of deep links with the legal community and East London, Europe`s most dynamic and exciting urban environment. ELU School of Law has executives in corporate and commercial law, public and international law, and all other major areas of law, and attracts student researchers from around the world. Located in the heart of legal London, we are the first law school in London to train students and practitioners at all stages of legal education.
